What is Canada Greener Homes and How Does it Work?
The Canada Greener Homes program was launched by the Federal Government in 2021.
It provides a grant up to $5,000 for solar and offers a 0% interest loan (10 year loan, up to $40,000) to cover the costs of your installation.
Are there any other incentives?
Yes, you can apply for the NB Power Total Home Savings Program and receive up to $3000 for the installation of solar panels.
How do I apply for these incentives?
You can apply to both the Canada Greener Home Grant and NB Total Home Savings Program through the NB Power Navigator service found HERE.
How much electricity can I produce?
Solar systems in New Brunswick can produce between 900-1100 kWh per kW annually. System performance depends on the direction, slope and shading impact of the solar panels. A 13 kW solar system with good characteristics can produce around 13,000 kWh each year which is worth approximately $1,600 at 2023 electricity rates.
How much can I save?
This depends on the size of the system installed. Many of our customers have installed a roof top or ground mount array to self generate 95-100% of their yearly consumption. All they are left to pay is their monthly grid connection fee.
What happens if I produce excess energy?
Net metering will reduce your electricity bill since the output of your generation is used to offset your electricity consumption. You will be billed for the difference between the electricity the utility delivers to you and the electricity your solar array produces over the billing period. This is the “net amount” of electricity. You will always pay the monthly service charge and HST must be applied to the total amount of electricity delivered.
What is my payback period?
Most customers are seeing a payback of 9-13 years for a rooftop array and 13-16 years for ground mount installations. The solar equipment is rated to last 30 years.
What happens to the value of my house?
Installing a solar system makes it more salable, easier to mortgage, and increases the value of the home.
What if rates go up?
Every time rates go up by 10%, it knocks an additional year off your payback period. Higher rates means greater savings and a shorter payback period for your increased return on investment.
What happens when the grid goes down?
Solar PV systems are designed to stop exporting power to the grid during outages for safety reasons. A typical net metered solar system without islanding components will cease to produce power when the grid is not active. To get the full use of your solar system even when the grid is down will require items such as an automatic changeover switch and hybrid inverter. We can install battery backup grid tied systems.
Why should I install solar panels for my apartment building or business?
Solar panels are a worthwhile investment that help you self generate electricity to meet your energy needs and reduce your reliance on the grid. Self generation helps lower operational expenses and manage continually rising utility costs.
Do solar panels work in winter months?
Certainly, solar power functions in winter months. Although solar panels are most efficient in the summer with extended daylight hours, they still generate electricity throughout the winter.
What is the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit?
On March 28th, the Federal Government introduced the 2023 Budget, featuring an exciting new tax incentive for those transitioning to clean energy technology. The Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit provides a 30% refundable tax credit for eligible projects such as new solar PV systems, batteries, solar heating, and heat pumps. You can claim this incentive for eco-friendly investments made from March 28th until 2034, aligning with the government’s goal to accelerate clean tech investment as Canada targets net zero by 2035.
To qualify, your business must be taxable, invest in specific equipment (Class 43.1 or 43.2), and fulfill upcoming labor requirements.
